DESCRIPTION

Commemorative cross carved by J Roddis of Birmingham and erected by Granville George Leveson-Gower, the second Earl of Granville and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1884, to commemorate the landing of St Augustine in 597 AD at Ebbsfleet. The cross is of a Celtic style about 7 metres high set on a stepped base.

St Augustine's Cross is a carved Celtic Cross on a stepped base erected in 1884 by Granville George Leveson Gower, second Earl of Granville, then Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, to commemorate the landing of St Augustine in 596 at Ebbsfleet in Pegwell Bay nearby and his preaching his first sermon to King Ethelbert of Kent near this spot. Latin inscription to this effect. (see also TR 36 SW 9). (1,2)
