FOUNTAINS ABBEY AND STUDLEY ROYAL PARK ESTATE

DESCRIPTION + /

OVERVIEW RECORD. This complex is recorded under a number of records which descibe the development of the landscape gardens from the Mediaeval deerpark owned by the Mallory family, to the acquisition of the estate by the Aislablie family in the 17th century, and the landscape developments thereafter. Each record signposts monuments associated with that record by Child/Parent record relationships, and non-heirarchical relationships by Associated Monuments. The Mallory estate is recorded under SE27SE22. The earliest attempts by the Aislabie's at landscaping, the `Old Park', are recorded as SE27SE27. The major developments by John and William Aislabie in the central park area are recorded as SE26NE21, and Fountains Hall (SE26NE8), although the water features of this period are recorded as SE26NE105. A later phase in the central park are recorded as SE26NE49 and cover the period from 1768-81. The features associated with the acquisition of Mackershaw Lodge are recorded as SE26NE106, (1730-42), the gardens West ofthe canal as SE26NE107, and South of the canal as SE26NE110. The major acquisition of the Fountains Abbey lands and their landscaping (1768-81) is recorded as SE26NE114. The Chinese Woods are recorded as SE26NE109, and the final phase of development from 1855-1909 under record SE26NE112.
