AML Survey Database Reference No.: 710 Survey type: Ground Penetrating Radar: recorded grid Survey by GB Geotechnics for the National Trust, to provide a good structural understanding of the engineering substrate of the triclinium floor including the mortar, the bridging stones and the hypocaust. The hypocaust was shown to consist of a series of substantial piers and pillars, with heating channels of c. 300-700mm in width between them, arranged in a random crisscross pattern across the entire floor area.

Resistivity and magnetometer surveys of the Garden Court; the area north of the North Wing; and the Outer Court, with the main purpose of investigating those areas not thought to have been excavated. A circular feature in the centre of Garden Court, thought to be a well, was shown to be a possible fountain base. Possibly sheep pens were detected in the Outer Court, and the route of the original trackway to the villa was recorded.

Excavation in response to rabbit incursions into the hypocaust system; a densely cobbled surface bordered by an opus signinum floor was revealed and a hitherto unknown stokehole located in the south wall of the 'Turkish' Bath House. This was found to contain a fine pewter cup of 4th century date. Work, completed in 1997, also included excavation in the South Wing and Portico.

One of Goodburn's trenches was re-opened and extended in order to investigate the function of the area. An extension to the south wing comprising a high status residence with a hypocaust and possible tiled portico has been revealed. There is also an indication of pre- and sub- Roman activity. Supplementary information from National Trust Site Activity Short Record.

Training excavation in corridor of S wing revealed a grain dryer with associated pottery suggesting use during the late C4th- early C5th. In the N wing the area of the dining room was investigated. A small trial trench was also dug to test a geophysical undertaken on the terrace behind the N wing (see UID 1309558). This suggested the possibility of the existence of an additional N wing on the higher ground to the rear of the presently known structure.

Training excavation. Lack of mid C4th features suggested the central courtyard was grassed over during the high point of the villa's development. Investigation in the lower courtyard in 2001 revealed an infant burial below a layer of hillwash which was sealed by limestone gravel paving. Subject to C14 dating it was speculated that this might represent the first early or pre-Roman evidence so far identified on the site. The Gloucestershire National Mapping Programme (NMP) survey covered the Forest of Dean and a small contextual zone, sample areas across the Cotswolds plus a complete survey of the northern parts of the Cotswolds. The project areas comprised 28 complete OS 1:10,000 scale quarter sheets (equivalent to 775 square kilometres) on the north Cotswolds, with 3 quarter sheets as pilots for the southern Cotswolds, plus 25 quarter sheets (equivalent to 531 square kilometres), up to the Welsh border on the western edge, of the Forest of Dean. The project also included small parts of Worcestershire and Warwickshire. An additional area was added (see Event description UID: 1437295) to provide contextual data for excavations along the Carrant Valley.
The aim of the project is to interpret and transcribe, at a scale of 1:10000, all archaeological features visible on aerial photographs, dating from prehistory to the twentieth century, including industrial and military sites. The main air photo sources consulted are held at the NMRC Swindon and the Cambridge University Committee for Aerial Photography (CUCAP), although cover held by the County Council will also be consulted. The archaeological mapping, using computerised plotting (AERIAL 5.18 and 5.24 and AutoCAD Map5), produces digital files and overlays to the 1:10,000 OS map base. Accompanying monument records are input to English Heritage's National Monuments Record database, AMIE. Copies of the finished plots will be available in both hard copy and digital form on the completion of the project. All data and documentation relating to the project will be archived at the National Monuments Record.
The NMP project began in May 2002, the Forest of Dean NMP survey is complete and the northern Cotswolds are scheduled to complete in Summer 2006.
As anticipated, the survey has added significantly to the number of sites in the Forest of Dean, and has led to the discovery of numerous previously unidentified monuments. This is an area where a vast amount of work by numerous individuals has built up a comprehensive record of industrial sites, and it was no surprise that the majority of features recorded by the NMP survey were associated with the Forest's industries. By combining the aerial photographic evidence with the information available within existing documentary records, especially those held by Gloucestershire SMR, and the valuable knowledge of local interest groups, the NMP survey has provided a unique overview of the surviving remains, particularly those associated with post medieval industry.
A report on the Forest of Dean NMP survey was issued in Spring 2006 (English Heritage Research Department Report Series 28/2006).
For further details on the project please contact Helen Winton at Aerial Survey, English Heritage, Swindon.
